Chapter 1 – Master your Emotional Self
You like to imagine yourself in control of your fate, consciously planning the course of your life as best you can. But you are largely unaware of how deeply your emotions dominate you.
Whenever something bad befalls us we immediately look externally for the cause of that situation. We blame people, governments, society, communities, etc. before we blame ourselves.
It could be that external entities are to blame for some issues, but it is imperative that one seeks out the causes (of a situation) that he can control rather than the causes he cannot control.
You do not have control over other people, governments and communities; but you do have control over yourself.
The first step toward becoming rational is to understand our fundamental irrationality.
No one is free from emotions & irrationality.
The wise, the intellectual and the educated are irrational at times.
We will introduce the main steps in banishing irrationality and welcoming rationality further on.
One must understand that irrationality is promoted in the modern world.
How can businesses sell you something you don’t need?
They connect to the irrational side of man.
Advertisers bombard us with highly effective subliminal messages. Our continual connection to social media makes us prone to new forms of viral emotional effects. These are not media designed for calm reflection. With their constant presence, we have less and less mental space to step back and think.
Irrational people are easily affected by the subliminal messages of advertisers. They associate a product with the notion of success, beauty, prestige, etc.
Rational people are introspective. They are able to remove emotions from their thought processes to an extent and think clearly and objectively. This is why rational people tend not to be affected by advertisements, social media, and other modern day distractions.
How to banish irrationality.
STEP ONE: Recognize the Biases.
- The Appearance Bias :
Do not misread people. People are not who they seem to be. Generally, we see people not as they are, but as they appear to us.
- THE GROUP BIAS:
We like to agree with the ideas of a group, so we can belong. The feelings of isolation & alienation crush us from inside. We avoid this by following an ideology of an established group. It is imperative to follow your own ideology even though it alienates you from others.
- THE BLAME BIAS:
When something goes wrong, we immediately point the finger at someone or something else. We never consider ourselves as the cause of an issue. It is important to look at ourselves before we look at the mistakes of others.
- SUPERIORITY BIAS:
Deep down, we like to consider ourselves superior to others, whether that be in intellect, morals or wealth & prestige. This bias is also known as arrogance. Arrogance limits the individual from learning and growth; because one thinks he is better he is inclined to refuse the advice of others.
BEWARE THE INFLAMING FACTORS.
There are several factors which contribute to irrationality.
TRIGGER POINTS FROM EARLY CHILDHOOD
There are key moments in our childhood that leave a deep impression upon us. This could be something positive such as ‘walking the dog in a meadow and smelling the smell of flowers’ or it could be something negative such as ’embarrassing yourself at an important social event’.
These impressionable moments may be triggered at a later point in the future, and the same emotions that were felt the first time will be felt when those moments are triggered the second time.
Greene gives the example of a boy who has a distant mother. He experiences abandonment and deals with his mothers bitter nature. Later on in life, his relationship partner might show hints of disapproval in his actions and he will associate her disapproval with the same actions of his mother.
This will trigger those emotions felt in the past and will send him into fury, depression or any other ferocious emotion. The partner will be confused as too why a slight disapproval affected him greatly.
This is very common. Many people have irrational fears and emotional tendencies that they themselves cannot explain. Among the reasons for these fears and tendencies are sourced from childhood (I guess this is why psychologists ask their patients about their childhood alot).
Sudden Gains or Losses
Winnings that are not achieved by hard work, patience and according to the principles of success are regarded as sudden gains.
Sudden gains could be winning a large sum of money at the poker machines, or it could be simply finding a good amount of money.
These situations tend to become addicting. We will desire more and more sudden winnings.
When sudden winnings become addictive, you begin to chase winnings instead of working for it. You will disregard the true principles of success and begin to place your hopes on luck and the whims of the people that surround you.
Also, sudden loses have the impact of sending one into mania and irrationality. To have ‘a lot’ one day and nothing the next day is a burdensome toll to pay.
The advice regarding these situations is to remain aware and critical of your winnings and losses. Make sure you are aware of the source of your winnings & losses. Once you are aware, you are able to refrain yourself from falling into the addictive cycle of sudden winnings. Once you are aware, you are able to withdraw from a situation (sudden loss) and come back to it when your mind is level and clear.
When emotional and psychological pressure is placed on someone they will attempt to contain themselves and attempt to act as civilized as possible.
But, rising pressure tends to bring out the worst out of people. Rising pressure could bring out irrational behavior such as; extreme anger, childish behavior, melancholy, etc.
When you feel that the pressure is rising, make sure to withdraw from the immediate situation and retreat so that you could get a clearer perspective.
There are people in the world who by their nature tend to trigger powerful emotions in almost everyone they encounter.
I am sure we all know one or more individuals who we are emotionally affected by.
First you must learn to identify an inflaming individual. Key indicators of an inflaming individual include; charisma and good social skills, changes in the mood of an environment, good communication skills, the ability to adapt to many situations, etc.
It is important to recognize the inflaming individuals that you may have in your daily life, so that you are not affected by their sweet words and magnetizing presence.
The Group Effect
Our moods and inclinations tend to change when we are part of a group.
This could include religious groups, sporting groups, crowds at sporting events, groups of protesters and so on.
When in a group, our emotions mimic the emotions off the complete group. When in a group there is a dominant set of emotions which you can call; ‘collective emotions’. We tend to follow the emotions of the group because being in a group does not stimulate independent reasoning but rather the intense desire to belong.
The advice here is to ’emotionally withdraw’ from the group. Awareness is key to this inflaming factor and many others. When you are aware of the group affect, you are most likely are not going to be influenced by it.
STRATEGIES TO BRING OUT THE RATIONAL SELF
Know yourself deeply: Study yourself. What are your weaknesses? What are your trigger points? Analyze your previous mistakes. How can you improve>
Find the source of your emotions: Sometimes your emotions are not a direct response to external stimulus. Responses may be due to: trigger points from early childhood, a bad day, mental state affected by drugs or alcohol. Remember: Withdraw before reacting irrationally.
Withdraw from a situation: It is wise to step back from a situation before exhibiting your full emotions and judgement. Sometimes a situation is not what it seems to be. Sometimes bad situations are actually a good in disguise. Analyze a situation before reacting to it.
Balance thinking and emotions: The horse is the emotions. The rider is thought. Without the other, nothing can be achieved. However, if they are together, they are able to become a powerful force.

- Disease in most of us is due to a waste of prana generated in the body. Complete relaxation of the body during sleep and several times during the day will conserve the prana generated in the body.
- Thoughts of happiness, hope, faith, courage and strength tend to conserve prana. While thoughts of sorrow, fear and worry tend to deplete the prana generated in the body
- Stand or sit with spine erect, point your lips just as you do when you whistle, leaving a small hole. Now close your nostrils with the fingers and inhale slowly a deep breath through the pointed mouth. Close the mouth and exhale through the nostrils. Practice this about ten times. This will cure diseases due to impure blood.
- Practise whistling each day for about five minutes. This will strengthen the lungs and purify the blood as well.
The Art of War – Free PDF
The Art of War (1521), one of only a few works of Machiavelli to be published during his lifetime, is a dialogue set in the Orti Oricellari, a garden in Florence where humanists gathered to discuss philosophy and politics. The principal speaker is Fabrizio Colonna, a professional condottiere and Machiavelli’s authority on the art of war. He urges, contrary to the literary humanists, that the ancients be imitated in “strong and harsh things, not delicate and soft”—i.e., in war. Fabrizio, though a mercenary himself, inveighs against the use of mercenaries in modern times and presents the Roman army as his model of military excellence. The dialogue was later praised by the Prussian war theorist Carl von Clausewitz (1780–1831) and has achieved a prominent place in the history of writings on war. (The Britannica).
If physical alchemy is the transmutation from copper (invaluable metal) to gold (valuable metal), then mental alchemy is the transmutation from undesirable mental states to desirable mental states.
“Mind (as well as metals and elements) may be transmuted, from state to state; degree to degree; condition to condition; pole to pole; vibration to vibration. True Hermetic Transmutation is a Mental Art” (The Kybalion)
If you are fearful, and you wish to become more courageous, the process of mental alchemy will be transmuting fear into courage.
There are many mental alchemy techniques, however in this article we will limit ourselves to three effective techniques in mental alchemy:
- Emotional Transmutation.
- Polarity Transmutation.
- Correspondence Transmutation.
1. Transmuting emotions into productivity.
Emotions are raw energy.
Any action performed under the influence of emotion is more powerful than an action that is not performed with emotion.
Love, romance, and sex are all emotions capable of driving men to heights of super achievement.Think and Grow Rich
Mothers perform great feats when the fear of potential harm to her baby is present.
When fighting, any blow influenced by anger/rage is much stronger (however, less accurate).
With regard to memory, emotions make a sensation or idea easier to memorize as opposed to an emotionless idea (The more interest that is given into an idea, the more memorable that idea becomes).
This mental alchemy technique is concerned with; turning your emotions into energy and using that energy to become more productive.
EMOTION -> ENERGY -> PRODUCTIVITY
How to transmute emotions into productivity.
Maintain and Regulate Emotions.
You must maintain your emotions, rather than acting on each fleeting emotion. Instead of exhibiting a certain emotion when it feels normal to do so, keep it inside (this is not suppressing the emotion, this is storing it for later use).
Our purpose in this step is not to suppress our emotions forever, rather it is to acknowledge our emotions and store them for later transmutation into energy.
Convert Emotion into Energy.
Now that you have some emotions stored in your ’emotions bank’, you have to withdraw those emotions before you are to work on a project or require energy for some reason.
When you resurface previously buried emotions, you begin to experience those emotions. And since emotion is energy, you can then use that ’emotional energy’ when working on a project, creating art, studying, etc.
For example, Mary before painting an artwork takes a brief pause and unearths all those buried emotions. Upon unearthing her emotions, she begins to feel those emotions (positive or negative). She bathes herself in those emotions for a couple of moments, and now she possesses something called ’emotional energy’.
Focus Energy onto a Project.
Now that you possess the powerful ’emotional energy’, you must be sure not to waste it on any non-beneficial pursuit.
You must focus your emotional energy on your prioritized project.
If you paint, compose or write, use emotional energy to motivate you and to transform your emotions onto the canvas, on the song or the book.
2. Utilize the Principle of Polarity
“Everything is dual; everything has poles; everything has its pair of opposites; like and unlike are the same; opposites are identical in nature, but different in degree; extremes meet; all truths are but half-truths; all paradoxes may be reconciled.”
The Principle of Polarity defines that everything has two sides, two aspects, two poles: a pair of opposites.
The Principle of Polarity shows the neophyte that he is able to transmute from one mental state to its opposite
Examples of this include:
- Noise & Quiet
- North & South
- East & West
- Positive & Negative
- Hot & Cold
- Light & Darkness
- Truth & Falsehood
- Sharp & Dull
How to transmute from one mental state to its opposite
Knowledge and continual remembrance of the Principle of Polarity is half the work in transmuting from mental state to mental state.
If you are in a depressed mental state, it is wise to remind yourself of the opposite mental state (joy).
By remembering the opposite mental state, you are making it known that there is always another mental state.
And when the other mental state is considered, the individual can subconsciously work towards attaining that state.
The other half of transmuting from state to state is ‘performing actions that correspond to your desired state’
This involves immersing yourself into the desired mental state so that you can manifest that desired state. It is well known that if your thoughts, body language and behaviors are positive then so shall your mental state be.
Just as someone who is throwing a tantrum and screaming has put himself in the Anger state, one can perform actions that could put him in the Love state.
If you wish to enter into a ‘Love’ state of mind, perform acts of love.
Give to charity, help out people, perform acts of kindness, be caring and attentive to people’s problems and so on.
Also, this technique could also include thinking, visualizing and reminiscing on his own experiences with love.
He may remember the times he was loving to others, or others were loving to him.
He could visualize being loving to someone else. And he may plan on being loving in the future.
All of these mental actions have the ability to switch his mental state from Anger/Hate to Love
3. Utilize the Principle of Correspondence
“As above, so below; as below, so above.”
This statement could be re-formatted as such:
‘As outside, so inside; as inside, so outside.’
‘As in the conscious mind, so in the subconscious mind; As in the subconscious mind, so in the conscious mind.’
So whatever state the conscious mind is in for an extended amount of time, the subconscious mind will adapt to and whatever state the subconscious mind is in, the conscious mind will adapt to.
“Every thought or action which is not harmonious, whether through ignorance or design, will result in discord and limitation of all kinds”Murphy, J (2011).
Daily behavior and speech is absorbed by the subconscious, and then whatever is registered in the subconscious will be manifested later on.
The principle is like a cycle, the contents of the (sub) conscious may change but the cycle is everlasting.
Hence by understanding the interdependent, yet interrelated nature of the subconscious and the conscious mind, we come to a point where there are two methods of influencing behavior.
The first method is using the subconscious mind to influence the conscious mind and the second method is using the conscious mind to influence the subconscious mind.
How to use the Principle of Correspondence to transmute from state to state.
- Create Good Habits & Leave Bad Habits
Whatever you busy yourself with consciously, will manifest in the subconscious mind.
Changing your habits, changes your mental programming.
It is important to engage yourself with good habits so that the subconscious mind is programmed positively.
And, you should refrain from bad habits as you do not want to program the subconscious mind with negativity and a bad attitude.
- Make Changes to Your External Environment
The subconscious mind is like a sponge, it absorbs any external stimulus and imprints your mind with such stimulus.
If your external environment is clean, peaceful, and organized, so will be your mind.
What is the External Environment?
The External Environment is anything outside your internal environment (the mind).
You can physically observe your External Environment (your room, your house, your workplace, the people you associate with, the places you visit, etc.)
By making changes to your external environment, you also make changes to your internal environment.
- Clean your room daily.
- Visit good places/venues.
- Be vigilant of what you consume. (media, foods, music, etc.)
- Accept and Reject Heterosuggestions
If anyone gives you a negative suggestion reject it, and if anyone gives you a positive suggestion accept it.
Remember, whatever is accepted by the conscious mind is accepted by the subconscious.
If you are given a negative suggestion, consciously deny it. Tell yourself ‘I am not that way, and those individuals who give me the negative suggestion are wrong’.
When people give you a positive suggestion/compliment, accept it and tell yourself ‘I am that way, they are correct’.
- Alter a negative statement to a positive statement.
Instead of saying something like “I can’t do this”, say “I can do this” or “I can do this if I try hard”.
If you find yourself saying a negative statement, stop in the middle of the statement and either alter the statement or start a new positive statement.
Joseph Murphy (2011) mentions a story of a girl looking at an expensive bag through a store window.
She was about to say, “I can’t afford that bag”, when instead she said “That bag is mine. It is for sale. I accept it mentally, and my subconscious sees to it that I receive it”.
At eight o’clock Christmas Eve her fiancé presented her with a bag the same as the one she looked at in the morning.
“Never finish a negative statement; reverse it immediately, and wonders will happen to your life” (Murphy, 2011).
In this article we covered three main mental alchemy techniques:
- Emotional Transmutation
- Polarity Transmutation
- Correspondence Transmutation
Emotional Transmutation involves converting emotions into an ’emotion infused energy’ and using that powerful energy towards a project or goal.
Polarity Transmutation involves switching from one mental state to its opposite through simply acknowledging the opposite mental state and performing actions that correspond to your desired mental state.
Correspondence Transmutation involves reprogramming your subconscious mind so that your conscious mind is operating on the lines of your will and desire.
Many people are becoming aware of the subconscious mind and understand how important it is to work with the subconscious in order to better their lives. However, with the extensive literature surrounding the topic, people are becoming confused as to what the subconscious mind really is and how they can effectively use it.
This piece aims to return the basics and the original writers to shed some clarity on the subconscious mind. The Principles presented herein are not methods or ideas, they are the essential reality of how the subconscious mind operates in relation to the conscious mind.
The Five Principles for working with Subconscious Mind are:
- Correspondence – As Within, So Without – As Below, So Below
- Filter – The conscious mind acts as a filter, allowing and disallowing information to be transmitted to the subconscious mind.
- Always Active – The subconscious mind is always active. All external stimuli are absorbed by the subconscious at all times.
- Conflict – A conflict between the conscious and the subconscious thwarts an individual’s effort in programming the subconscious mind.
- Dominant Idea – The subconscious mind gives preference to the dominant idea.
Throughout this piece, these five important principles will be explained. We will be using two books to help elucidate our arguments; Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill and The Power of Your Subconscious Mind by Joseph Murphy,
As Inside, So Outside; As Above, So Below.
There is a direct connection between the conscious and the subconscious mind.
Whatever happens consciously will be registered into the subconscious mind. And vice versa; whatever is in the subconscious mind will manifest itself on the conscious mind.
If you think, speak, act and live in a negative manner, that will be the seed planted in your mind. As you continue to nurture this seed, you grow an undesirable plant. And that plant represents an undesirable and miserable life.
However, if you regularly think and speak positively, you plant a seed that will grow into a beautiful plant; that being a desirable and fulfilling life.
The conscious and subconscious mind are interdependent on each other.
The conscious mind relies on the subconscious mind for programs.
These programs are also known as habits. Once a thought pattern or a behaviour pattern is established in the subconscious mind, said thought or said behaviour becomes a habit.
Also, the conscious mind can create programs for the subconscious mind.
By sheer willpower and repetition, one can develop a program for the subconscious. This is essentially how habits are formed. One repeats a certain action for a long amount of time until that action becomes involuntary.
Reflect on the time when you first tried to ride a bike. You needed to focus and perform mental checks all the time. As you followed that process for an extended amount of time, the action of riding a bike became natural and involuntary. You no longer need to focus on hand placements and the movements of your legs, you hop on and ride away.
There are two ways to apply this law:
The Outward – Inward Approach.
Think about an action that you perform involuntarily, for example, checking your phone right after you wake up. If you are able to change that action you can reprogram your subconscious to perform a different action each time you wake up.
If the conscious mind prompts a certain behaviour or thought pattern or is exposed to a certain environment regularly, the subconscious mind.
Based on this, it seems important to a) repeat something you wish to ingrain in your subconscious b) surround yourself with the things of which you would like to ingrain in your subconscious.
The Inward – Outward Approach.
This approach looks at changing your inner programs to change your outer behaviours and actions.
This approach looks at autosuggestion to change the subconscious mind.
Many contemporary writers have given detailed steps for autosuggestion; however I find that these detailed steps are unnecessary.
“Autosuggestion is a term which applies to all suggestions and all self-administered stimuli which reach one’s mind through the five senses” (Hill, 1983)
The key elements of autosuggestion are:
High Suggestibility – For the subconscious mind to pick up suggestions, the subconscious mind needs to be more accessible than the conscious mind. The conscious mind must be submerged temporarily. This is done through meditation, sleeping, hypnosis and general relaxation. At these moments you have high suggestibility and any suggestion made will reach the subconscious mind easily.
Emotion – “Plain, unemotional words do not influence the subconscious mind” (Hill, 1983). Many people utilise autosuggestion incorrectly by not including emotion with the statements that they are saying. An autosuggestion without emotion is considered to be a futile autosuggestion. In the following chapters we will explain why a statement without emotion will fail to make its way to the subconscious mind.
Faith – “When faith is blended with thought, the subconscious mind instantly picks up the vibration, translates it into its spiritual equivalent, and transmits it to Infinite Intelligence, as in the case of prayer” (Hill, 1983). If you do not believe that your autosuggestion will become true, then it will not become true. If you do believe it will become true, then it will become true.
There are a few other tips for effective autosuggestion, however the above three elements are the most important.
The conscious mind acts as a filter, allowing and disallowing information to be transmitted to the subconscious mind.
Sometimes external stimulus is not transmitted to the subconscious and that is due to the filtering process of the conscious mind.
If the conscious mind finds some information to be untrue, then that information is rejected.
Many people make affirmations for wealth in the present tense.
A common one is ‘I am wealthy’. Later on, they may look into their wallets and find nothing there. At this point there is a conflict. You said you are wealthy, but you really aren’t. With this actual lack of wealth comes the feeling of the lack of wealth.
An affirmation mixed with faith and emotion is much more powerful than a vain affirmation.
“ALL THOUGHTS WHICH HAVE BEEN EMOTIONALIZED, (given feeling) AND MIXED WITH FAITH, begin immediately to translate themselves into their physical equivalent or counterpart” (Hill, 1983).
Many people try to deceive their minds by repeating a statement over and over.
This is futile.
The only way that affirmations could work is by attaching an emotion & faith to the affirmation. The best way to attach an emotion & faith to an affirmation is to visualise a scenario in which the affirmation has come to pass.
Visualisation is the closest you can get to actually experiencing a scenario.
“Visualization is simply the creation of a strong Mental Image of the thing desired and perfecting it each until it becomes almost clear as an existing material thing. Then the Visualization tends to Materialize itself–that is, it begins to build around itself (the) actual material conditions corresponding with the mental framework” (Atkinson, 1909)
If you want to feel rich, visualise yourself as rich and iron out all the details; what car are you driving? What clothes you are wearing? How are you obtaining your wealth? And so on.
When visualising the money, you intend to accumulate, see yourself rendering the service, or delivering the merchandise you intend to give in return for this money. This is important! (Hill, 1983).
The information that should not be allowed to make its way into the subconscious mind includenegative dialogue phrases, negative visuals and negative music.
The filter process plays an important part regarding the rejection of information into the subconscious mind.
If one does not use his conscious mind to actively reject such external stimuli then that information could easily enter the subconscious mind.
“Check regularly on the negative suggestions people make to you. You do not have to be influenced by destructive heterosuggestions” (Murphy, 1963)
The subconscious mind is always active. All external stimuli are absorbed by the subconscious at all times.
“The first thing to realize is that your subconscious mind is always working” (Murphy, 1963)
Anything that is sensed or felt is transmitted to the subconscious mind, even if such sensations or stimulus are not consciously registered.
Hence it becomes essential to take heed of your environment.
Are you in an environment that fosters positive experiences or negative experiences?
Are you actively watching or listening to media that is of a good or bad nature?
Are you with people that speak and act positively or negatively?
It is important to spend most of your time in a good environment, however this cannot be the case for most of the time. Undoubtedly you will find yourself in an undesirable environment, and it is important that at that moment you should remain aware and vigilant. Mentally reaffirm to yourself that such environments are not good and never allow yourself to get comfortable in such environments.
The mind works off habits and familiarity. Whatever is familiar is what the mind will seek, and whatever the mind seeks, is what the person himself will seek.
An important question arises here:
Are people the controllers of their mind or is the mind the controller of the person?
The answer is both.
We live based on the patterns and attitudes submerged in our subconscious mind. Hence, we say the mind controls the person. However, the person is fully capable of changing those patterns and attitudes and therefore we can also say that the person controls the mind.
The subconscious mind controls a person’s actions and behaviours without him even realising.
We perform certain things every day without a voluntary will to do so. We pull out our phones in certain situations, we wake up and perform the same behaviours every morning and before we sleep, we perform the same behaviours.
However, through self-awareness one can pick up on certain habits, and through willpower and determination one can replace a regularly performed behaviour with a more desirable behaviour. Then the mind will pick up on the new pattern and sooner or later one finds himself performing the new behaviour involuntarily.
To conclude; we find that it is important to practice self-awareness and reflect on the environments you spend most of your time. It is not wise to allow your mind to become too familiar with an undesirable environment, it is better for one to choose himself which environments the mind can become familiar with.
A conflict between the conscious and the subconscious thwarts an individual’s effort in programming the subconscious mind.
This is an essential law for those who are struggling to see results from their efforts in reprogramming their subconscious mind.
You desire wealth and proceed to perform affirmations, autosuggestions, and other techniques in order to attract wealth. However, at the same time you worry and fret about the lack of wealth, you also criticise and feel a tint of animosity upon seeing others who are wealthy.
Joseph Murphy (1963) writes; “This is why they lack; they are condemning the thing they desire and want.”
At this point there is a conflict. You consciously wish and desire for wealth, yet your subconscious has already associated wealth with worry, stress and animosity.
To effectively program your subconscious mind to attract wealth, your subconscious mind must have a completely positive association with wealth.
You cannot attract what you criticize.

If you wish to reprogram your attitudes and beliefs, you must keep this principle in mind.
You already have dominant attitudes that currently shape your life. Reprogramming these deeply rooted attitudes is no easy feat.
Affirmations and autosuggestion are not enough. You must live up to your desired attitude.

Thought is considered Step 0, it is one of the ‘requirements’ of the procedure to success.
Both poverty and riches are the offspring of thought
Everything which man creates begins in the form of a thought impulse.
Many people will say ‘I want success‘ but all they think about is how they can fake being successful.
If they begin to think about actually attaining success they have begun the procedure.
Then the actual start of the procedure for success begins at desire.
Everything man creates or acquires begins in the form of desire.
If people are thinking & ruminating about success but don’t have an intense desire they will fail at the second step: desire
Obviously, an individual may have more than one desire. If the desire for success is not the highest (prioritized) desire, then success cannot be attained.
Most people in the world fail in the desire step.
Everyone desires to be successful but most desire short term pleasures much more. That is holding these people back. You cannot attain something that you don’t fully desire.
The next step is planning.
Planning is difficult because it requires deep logical thinking, something people avoid these days.
There is no hope of success for the person who does not have a central purpose, or definite goal at which to aim.
People fail at planning because they don’t have the patience to sit down and list what they really want and how they will achieve what they really want.
It’s easy to say, ‘I want money’, but it’s hard to come up with a definite plan onto how you will acquire that money.
People work hard and see no results because they don’t plan or don’t plan correctly.
The final step in the attainment of success is persistence. Persistence is doubly harder than planning.
It is one thing to plan something out, and another to actually work it out.
Most of us are good ‘starters’ but poor ‘finishers’ of everything we begin. Moreover, people are prone to give up at the first signs of defeat.
Writers have to write complete books for years just to get rejected.
Athletes, need to stay on par regarding their diet, exercise regimen and mental attitude all the time.
Businessmen lose so much money and opportunities while in the pursuit of success.
Most people would give up.
Only those who persist can be victorious.
The reason we have spent some time explaining one sentence is because the whole book can be summarized in that sentence!
Of course, there are many techniques that the author mentions that can assist such as autosuggestion, emotion transmutation and concentration but that procedure is the essence.
Chapter 2: DESIRE
Six Ways to Turn Desire into Gold.
First. Fix in your mind the exact amount of money you desire. It is not sufficient merely to say “I want plenty of money.” Be definite as to the amount.
Second. Determine exactly what you intend to give in return for the money you desire. (There is no such reality as “something for nothing.”)
Third. Establish a definite date when you intend to possess the money you desire.
Fourth. Create a definite plan for carrying out your desire, and begin at once, whether you are ready or not, to put this plan into action.
Fifth. Write out a clear, concise statement of the amount of money you intend to acquire, name the time limit for its acquisition, state what you intend to give in return for the money, and describe clearly the plan through which you intend to accumulate it.
Sixth. Read your written statement aloud, twice daily, once just before retiring at night, and once after arising in the morning. AS YOU READ— SEE AND FEEL AND BELIEVE YOURSELF ALREADY IN POSSESSION OF THE MONEY.

Chapter 3: FAITH
FAITH is the head chemist of the mind. When FAITH is blended with the vibration of thought, the subconscious mind instantly picks up the vibration, translates it into its spiritual equivalent, and transmits it to Infinite Intelligence, as in the case of prayer.
If you do not have faith in yourself, your abilities and the future, how are you to succeed?
The person who does not have faith gives up easily because he cannot see himself succeeding in life.
Never place yourself in a box and say ‘this is where I am, this is where I belong.’
There are no limitations to the mind except those that we acknowledge.
How to Develop Faith?
Faith is something that can be developed.
The master of his mind can plant the seeds of faith, and watch them grow into a beautiful fruit bearing tree.
However, the slave to his mind is affected by external situations and his faith is always wavering.
Affirmations is the first exercise in building faith.
FAITH is a state of mind which may be induced, or created, by affirmation or repeated instructions to the subconscious mind, through the principle of auto-suggestion.
Repetition reinforces what ever you say and do.
If you repeat a certain activity every day, you are surely going to become better at it.
If you repeat a certain statement (true or false) you will start to believe in that statement.
It is a well known fact that one comes, finally, to BELIEVE whatever one repeats to one’s self, whether the statement be true or false.
Faith is an absolute necessity when ‘Thinking to Grow Rich’.
ALL THOUGHTS WHICH HAVE BEEN EMOTIONALIZED, (given feeling) AND MIXED WITH FAITH, begin immediately to translate themselves into their physical equivalent or counterpart
This can be summarized into a formula of sorts:
THOUGHT + EMOTION + FAITH = MANIFESTATION
Many people fail with auto-suggestion and affirmation due to the reason that they don’t emotionalize and add faith to their statements.
Remember: Do not simply repeat an affirmation superficially. You must add emotion and faith to the statement.
Emotion is raw energy & Faith is the force that imprints a statement into the subconscious.
To add emotion, you must feel the manifestation of your affirmation.
If your affirmation is; ‘I am wealthy.’ You must feel as if you are wealthy at that moment.
You may say, ‘How I can feel something that I truly know to be false?’
The answer is – REPETITION.
The more you repeat something, the more common it becomes to the mind and hence, the more valid it becomes.
Later on, the author emphasizes on the importance of positive thoughts.
It is essential for you to encourage the positive emotions as dominating forces of your mind, and discourage –and eliminate negative emotions.
A mind that is only concerned with positive thoughts becomes a breeding place for faith. The positive mind has faith and hope while the negative one has misery and despair.
How can you maintain a positive mind?
It is true that the mind can never remain positive all the time. But it is advised that man should keep his mind in a positive state.
Here are some different tips and techniques:
- Stay away from negative people, media (movies, music, news) and environments.
- Regularly practice gratitude. You cannot be grateful and sad at the same time.
- Mindfulness and Meditation.
- Associate with positive people, media and environments.

Chapter 4: Autosuggestion
AUTO-SUGGESTION IS THE MEDIUM FOR INFLUENCING THE SUBCONSCIOUS MIND.
AUTO-SUGGESTION is a term which applies to all suggestions and all self-administered stimuli which reach one’s mind through the five senses.
Sometimes people wait for an opportunity or a plan to start making money. Instead of just waiting, you should hand over your issue to the subconscious mind, and it will bring opportunities and plans to you.
Do not wait for a definite plan, but begin at once to see yourself in possession of the money, demanding and expecting meanwhile, that your subconscious mind will hand over the plan, or the plans you need.
When visualizing the money you intend to accumulate, see yourself rendering the service, or delivering the merchandise you intend to give in return for this money. This is important!
This is important indeed. Many people imagine and daydream about money, but never make any progress because it’s just a dream!
However, when you begin to feel the happiness of accumulating money and when you begin to visualize yourself exchanging goods and services for money, the visualization becomes clear and will become real one day because you have ‘tricked’ your subconscious into believing you are already rich.
How to stimulate the subconscious mind?
The subconscious mind is a sponge. It absorbs any thought that has been emotionalized and mixed with faith.
For our efforts of working with the subconscious mind to be successful, we must send clear, on point and faithful auto-suggestions to the subconscious mind.
You must perform the following exercises after you have finished the Six Steps in the previous chapter:
FIRST: go into some quiet spot . . ., close your eyes and repeat aloud, the written statement of the amount of money you intend to accumulate, the time limit for its accumulation, and a description of the service or merchandise you intend to give in return for the money.
SECOND: repeat this program night and morning until you can see (in your imagination) the money you intend to accumulate.
THIRD: place a written copy of your statement where you can see it night a morning, and read it just before retiring, and upon arising until it has been memorized.
Chapter 5: Specialized Knowledge
There are two types of knowledge. One is general, the other is specialized.
– General knowledge is of little use towards the purpose of making money.
– Specialized knowledge concerns direct intention of making money.
In 3 Economic Principles for Success we mentioned there are three types of knowledge that can benefit the seeker.
1. Theoretical Knowledge
2. Practical Knowledge
3. Relevant News
These three fall under the category of specialized knowledge.
Theories are important, because they explain the bigger picture of things, practical knowledge converts those theories into specialized actions, lastly the relevant news is important as markets depend on so many factors, and it is wise for the individual to stay in the know of any changes.
One statement I wish to emphasize on is:
Knowledge is only potential power. It becomes power only when, and if, it is organized into definite plans of action and directed to a definite end.
Also, Napoleon Hill mentions a statement that I cannot stress enough upon:
You can get all the knowledge you need.
This book was written in the 1930s, a time before internet & communication networks.
Imagine if the author was present today. He will be shocked by the amount of knowledge and surprised at the amount of lazy people.
What is your excuse?
We are at a time when knowledge has been made and converted into many formats:
Do not think you can become successful without gaining any knowledge.
Forget those advertisers telling you about their different e-commerce and drop shipping techniques, that is all garbage being promoted, so they can make money off you.
Another important thing to mention here is that no matter how old you are, busy you are, etc., you still can seek knowledge. Especially in these times, where knowledge has been made into digestible courses and summaries.
Just to keep the record straight, and to anticipate the alibis of those who will say, “I couldn’t go to school because I have a family to support” or “I’m too old”, I will add the information that Mr. Wier was past forty, and married when he went back to school. Mr. Wier completed in two years the work for which the majority of law students require four years.

The imagination is literally the workshop wherein are fashioned all plans created by man.
There are two types of imagination:
– Synthetic Imagination
– Creative Imagination
Synthetic Imagination is the arrangement or rearrangement of old ideas, plans or concepts into new combinations and creations.
Creative Imagination concerns the connection of the human mind to the ‘Infinite Intelligence’. It is the faculty through which “hunches” and “inspirations” are received.
There is an old tradition that proposes that only hard work and honesty will provide wealth.
This is not the case.
Riches are built upon the application of certain principles, the response to a certain demand and boom and bust fluctuations.
The subsequent chapters looks at imagination more deeply and practically.

Ideas are intangible forces, but they have more power than the physical brains that give birth to them. They have the power to live on, after the brain that creates them has returned to dust.

If the first plan which you adopt does not work successfully, replace it with a new plan; if this new plan fails to work, replace it in turn with still another, and so on, until you find a plan which does work.

First determine what job you exactly want, then choose the company who wish to work with, study your prospective employer and understand what they like & don’t like. Then match yourself with the role, determine your skills and how those skills will benefit your prospective employer. Write precisely your key selling points (what makes you valuable).
We wish to make a distinction between two methods of applying for jobs.
The first is the method that most people do; they simply click apply on online job seeking platforms, they don’t tailor their resume & cover letter on a company to company basis.
Then you have those who practice what we mention in the first paragraph, they research their prospective employer and tailor their application towards the employers interests.
The latter process will take more time, but it will receive much more results. Companies don’t want to see another generic application, they are looking for the application that stands out.

Genuine wisdom is usually conspicuous through modesty and silence.
Chapter 9: Persistence
Will Power + Desire = Success
If one has willpower but no desires of his own, he will work hard for the fulfilment of another person or company.
If one has no willpower but many desires, he is considered as a fanciful dreamer who is known for saying “oh I wish and I desire” and not “I desire and I WILL.
How you can train yourself to become persistent.
Define your Purpose: One can never be persistent in the pursuit of a phantasm. The requirement for persistence is definiteness of purpose.
Raise your desire: Think of desire as fuel and persistence as fire. The more fuel there is the stronger the fire.
Rely on Yourself: You must believe that you can succeed in order for you to become more persistent. How do you expect to persist in something that you don’t believe in.
Increase your Willpower. Through the habit of concentrating one’s thoughts upon the building of plans for the attainment of a definite purpose leads to persistence.
Choose your habits carefully. Man is the summation of his habits. It will be difficult for one to become persistent if his habits are diametrically opposed to persistence.

A good example to further your understanding of the relationship between the conscious and the subconscious is the work of a gardener. Your mind is a garden, and you are the gardener. You plant seeds (thoughts) in your subconscious mind all day long.
Those seeds after time, will sprout into a small plant (behavior). If those seeds remain for even longer the small plant becomes a large plant(habit).

If you wish to use the subconscious mind to eliminate fear, this may take a day or two. This is because fear is an aspect of the mind, most times there is nothing to be feared. The subconscious could easily manage this, sending messages to the conscious brain to loosen up and become less tense.
However some requests may take a while longer, for example you place the idea of earning a lot of money in your subconscious.
The subconscious mind will work to bring that along, and you will see that there will be changes in your behavior and habit. You may be more productive and more efficient, hence upon your manager seeing this, he might give you a pay rise. Or you may have a good flow of ideas, increased energy, clear mind so that you can focus on starting a business.
If you place the idea of becoming a strong individual with a toned body and big muscles, the subconscious mind will make working out easier for you in terms of motivation and energy.
You won’t become strong overnight, you will start to work out smarter and faster. Your life will revolve around becoming stronger. Whenever someone offers you an unhealthy snack you will refuse, even though you would have previously accepted.
Many people complain and bicker, mentioning that the usage of the subconscious mind never work. That is because they do not understand the true principles regarding the subconscious mind.
The Nature of the Subconscious Mind
The subconscious mind does not work on magic. “It draws on the infinite power, energy, and wisdom within you.”
Many people are under the foolish assumption that the subconscious mind will manifest anything in a short amount of time. While it may be true that someone else may give you what you have been
trying to manifest, sometimes the subconscious mind will give you all the tools required to manifest your request.
A common request that people wish for is wealth.
Sometimes you may receive that money directly, depending on the amount. But most times the subconscious will give your traits, qualities and habits required to achieve that wealth.
Relationship between the conscious and the subconscious.
I can easily make the assumption that people who wish to harness the power of the subconscious, use affirmations thinking that it will grant them what they desire.
We have heard this everywhere, ‘repeat what you wish to acquire and the subconscious will work on that for you’.
Affirmations do have potential to work, and are effective. However, I believe people do not really grasp the theory and principles behind affirmations, hence limiting their chances of success in using affirmations. For affirmations to work, your conscious mind must believe & have faith in what you are repeating.
Most people repeat “I am wealthy”, while they know deep down they are not. They look into their wallets every day and feel the lack of wealth. Hence, the subconscious mind will not receive the affirmation.

How to use affirmations properly?
Repeat AN affirmation while visualizing & feeling the fulfillment of the affirmation.
When you are visualizing you should attempt to the feel the emotions that correspond to the fulfillment of desire.

The success of this technique is dependent on the level of visualization someone has.
When visualizing, make sure you visualize the details and make sure the visualization is similar to how the scenario will unfold in real life.
Visualize yourself in the possession of money in an environment you know and frequent in your life, visualize what you are wearing at the time and visualize it as if it was a movie about yourself.
Make general affirmations.
Remember what we said about the issue of people making affirmations and not consciously believing in them. The following technique is aimed at overcoming that barrier.
By making general affirmations, your conscious mind cannot pick up on the validity of the statement.
For instance, a general affirmation that is mentioned in the book is, “By day and night I am being prospered in all of my interests”.
Heterosuggestions are suggestions from other people that influence an individual’s thinking patterns and attitude.
Your parents, environment and educators may have been giving you suggestions and certain thinking patterns since you were very young. And you might have been operating through these thinking patterns throughout your life.
For instance, a parent keeps mentioning the statement ‘money is the root of all evil’ in front of a six-year-old child.
That child will grow up with a lack of money, because the subconscious mind holds the program that money is bad and hence keeps him away from money.
It is incumbent for us today to examine if we have any negative programs passed on to us from our parents or our teachers.
To identify negative programs, we must look into our lives and see what aspects of life are we
constantly failing at. Are we failing at securing and maintaining wealth, are we failing at creating strong, close relationships, or are we unable to lose weight or get in shape.
Once you identify an area that you constantly fail at, most likely that it is because of a negative program that was fed to you.
However, as we get older it is important to reject heterosuggestions. For example, If people call you aloof or weird you mustn’t accept that statement. If you continue to reject those statements, that negative program will not enter your subconscious.
However, if people say good things about you, you should accept it. By accepting it you are allowing a positive suggestion to enter your subconscious. And hence you will emulate that positive suggestion more often.
“The suggestions of others in themselves have absolutely no power whatever over you except the power that you give them through your own thoughts. You have to give your mental consent; you have to entertain the thought. Then it becomes your thought, and you do the thinking. Remember, you have the capacity to choose.
Choose life ! Choose love ! Choose health !”

How to convey the idea of perfect health to your subconscious mind?
Relax yourself mentally and physically.
Once you are in a sleepy/drowsy state, mention a detailed suggestion you wish to give the subconscious.
The one Joseph Murphy mentions in the book is; “The perfection of God is now being expressed through me. The idea of perfect health is now filling my subconscious mind. The image God has of me is a perfect image and my subconscious mind recreates my body in perfect accordance with the perfect accordance with the perfect image held in the mind of God.”
Another method in conveying the idea of perfect health to your subconscious mind is through scientific visualization.
To do this, you must be in a relaxed state, then begin to visualize yourself healthy.
How would life change if you become healthy again ?
Visualize yourself going about your day as a healthy man or woman.

To use the passing over technique you must be in a reverie-like state (daydream).
Think about what you want and see it coming to you from that moment.
For example, you have a cold that you wish to get rid of. You may repeat,
“It is passing away now”.
The Visualization Technique
Visualize that which you want to acquire in complete detail.
For example, you want to land a job at a prestigious firm.
Visualize yourself dressed in a certain type of clothing while parking at a car park 5 minutes away from the office. Visualize yourself interacting with people in the elevator as you go up. Visualize everything you can think of.
“A mental picture held in the mind, backed by faith will come to pass.”
Faith is of utmost important. You cannot perform any subconscious programming techniques without faith.
Napoleon Hill mentions in the book Think & Grow Rich:
“Faith is the head chemist of the mind. When faith is blended with thought, the subconscious mind instantly picks up the vibration, translates it into its spiritual equivalent, and transmits it to Infinite Intelligence, as in the case of prayer.”

Enter into a drowsy, sleepy state, or a state akin to sleep.
Sum up your desire into a mantra, or a simple statement (‘Wealth’ or ‘Wealth & Health)
Repeat it over and over again as a lullaby.

When you repeat the words, “Wealth”, you instil in yourself the feeling of wealth.
The feeling of wealth produces wealth.
Another method in avoiding mental conflict is by making general affirmations.

This affirmation will not arouse any argument because it does not contradict your
subconscious mind’s impression of financial lack.
One preventative factor of wealth is envy.
The way to overcome this emotion is to say to yourself, “Isn’t it wonderful! I rejoice in that man’s propensity. I wish for him greater and greater wealth“.
Chapter 10: Your Right to Be Rich.
People have been conditioned to hate money.
They refer to money as “filthy lucre” or “the love of money is the root of all evil.”
Another reason they do not prosper is that they have a sneaky subconscious feeling
there is some virtue in poverty.
This subconscious pattern may be due to early childhood training, superstition, or it could be based on a false interpretation of scriptures.
You must never criticize what you desire as you cannot attract what you criticize.
It is important that you change your attitude and subconscious to possess the right beliefs about money.
Use a selection of the following statements several times a day:
“I like money, I love it, I use it wisely, constructively, and judiciously. Money is constantly circulating in my life. I release it with joy, and it returns to me multiplied in a wonderful way. It is good and very good. Money flows to me in avalanches of abundance. I use it for good only, and I am grateful for my good and for the riches of my mind.”

How to achieve success
The first step to success is to find out the work you love to do, then you must pursue that type of work.

The third step is the most important one.
You must be sure that the thing you want to do does not redound to your success only. Your desire must not be selfish; it must benefit humanity.
We advise our readers to read the following paragraphs, as the western world have never spread this advice to the people.
Is it the ambition of your life to accumulate great wealth, and thus to acquire a great name and along with it happiness and satisfaction? Then remember that whether these will come to you will depend entirely upon the use and disposition you make of your wealth. You delay the answer by thinking it will take a long time or that it is a major problem. Your subconscious has no problem it knows only the answer.

The man who is brooding, bitter, and resentful can swallow his sharp remarks, abate his anger, and he can go to great lengths to be considerate, kind, and courteous.

These days there are people who wish to achieve happiness by the purchasing of goods and attainment of wealth. They will never become happy through the attainment of wealth.
Wealth in and of itself will not make you happy,
The happiest are usually the best in the art of living life successfully.
You must choose happiness.
Happiness is a habit.
There is no block to your happiness. External things are not causative; these are effects, not cause. Take your cue from the only creative principle within you. Your thought is cause, and a new cause produces a new effect. Choose happiness.

The good you do for others comes back to you in like measure; and the evil you do returns to you by the law of your own mind. If a man cheats and deceives another, he is actually cheating and deceiving himself.

It is common knowledge that the news is in the business of fear and hatred. They know fear and negative emotions sell more than anything else so they fill our sceens with negativity.
Look at this short story:
A woman wrote to me about her husband, saying that he goes into a rage when he reads what certain newspaper columnists write in the newspaper. She added that this constant reaction of anger and suppressed rage on his part brought on bleeding ulcers, and his physician recommended an emotional reconditioning.
I invited this man to see me and I explained to him the way his mind functions indicating how emotionally immature it was to get angry when others write articles with which he disapproves or disagrees.
He began to realize that he should give the newspaperman freedom to express himself even though the latter disagreed with him politically, religiously, or in any other way. In the same manner, the newspaperman would give him freedom to write a letter to the newspaper disagreeing with his published statements.
He learned that he could disagree without being disagreeable.
To do so would mean that you had descended to that state of low mental vibration and become one with the negative atmosphere of theother. Too many times you will see yourself or others being affected by other people’s opinions and criticism.
Give no one in all the world the power to deflect you from your goal, your aim in life, which is to express your hidden talents to the world, to serve humanity, and to reveal more and more of God’s wisdom, truth, and beauty to all people in the world
On becoming emotionally mature.
What the other person says or does cannot really annoy or irritate you except you permit him to disturb you.
When you become emotionally mature, you do not respond negatively to the criticism and resentment of others. To do so would mean that you had descended to that state of low mental vibration and become one with the negative atmosphere of the other.
Be careful of social media and advertising.
Joseph Murphy is not present in current times when the proliferation of advertising and social media posts is causing a circus of misery among young people & old people.
The advice is the same. Either delete social media or be careful of what you see. The eyes are among the first pathways to jealously and jealously is among the first pathways to misery.
Advertisers bombard us with highly effective subliminal messages. Our continual connection to social media makes us prone to new forms of viral emotional effects. Chapter 17: How to Use Your Subconscious Mind for Forgiveness.
You cannot be hurt by criticism when you know that you are master of your thoughts, reactions, and emotions. This gives you the opportunity to pray and bless the other, thereby blessing yourself.
To forgive is to give something for. Give love, peace, joy, wisdom, and all the blessings of life to the other, until there is no sting left in your mind. This is really the acid test of forgiveness.
Chapter 18: How Your Subconscious Removes Mental Blocks.
How to break or build a habit
Habit is the function of your subconscious mind. You learned to swim, ride a bicycle, dance, and drive a car by consciously doing these things over and over again until they established tracks in your subconscious mind.
Then, the automatic habit action of your subconscious mind took over. This is sometimes called second nature, which is a reaction of your subconscious mind to your thinking and acting.
If you repeat a negative thought or act over a period of time, you will be under the compulsion of a habit. The law of your subconscious is compulsion.
When you have an intense hunger to overcome anything in your life, there will be a path out.
However, if you don’t have an intense hunger, then the opportunity will not present itself.
Consider this statement:
“All big things come from small beginnings. The seed of every habit is a single, tiny decision. But as that decision is repeated, a habit sprouts and grows stronger. Roots entrench themselves and branches grow. The task of breaking a bad habit is like uprooting a powerful oak within us. Chapter 19: How to Use Your Subconscious Mind to Remove Fear.
Ralph Waldo Emerson, philosopher and poet, said, “Do the thing you are afraid to do, and the death of fear is certain.”
Thoughts enveloped in the powerful emotion of fear are realized in the subconscious mind.
For instance if you fear you may fail a test, even though you have all the content memorized and have practiced well. The subconscious will place mental blocks while you are doing your exam as you imprinted the fear of failing in your subconscious mind.
There are two types of fear:
Normal Fear: This is the natural fear that is in every human. This fear is for self-preservation. If we hear a loud sound we are scared, we switch into a fight or flight mode in order to handle the situation.
Abnormal Fear: Abnormal fear takes place when man lets his imagination run riot.
The solution to abnormal fear.
When fear arises, there immediately comes with it a desire for some-thing opposite to the thing feared. Place your attention on the thing immediately desired. Get absorbed and engrossed in your desire, knowing that the subjective always overturns the objective.
A well known method that psychologists advise their patients with is exposure.
You can never leave a fear a behind without facing it.
Consider the following exercise mentioned in the book ‘Know Your Mind: Everyday Emotional and Psychological Problems and How to Overcome Them‘:
“To work properly, exposure needs to be done regularly, for at least 45 minutes 3-5 times a week, and systematically. Begin by drawing up a list of the situations you find frightening, and rank them in order of how stressful they are. So if, for example, you have a fear of spiders, you might run like this:“

Diets- and exercises won’t keep you young. As a man thinketh, so is he.
Fear of old age can bring about physical and mental deterioration.
Your retirement is a new venture. Take up new studies and new interests. You can now do the things you always wanted to do when you were so busy making a living. Give your attention to living life.
